Positive Talk Cannot Fix The Economy: Is This A Greater Depression?

Underneath the Happy Talk, Is This As Bad as the Great Depression?

Washington’s Blog
December 30, 2010

The following experts have - at some point during the last 2 years - said that the economic crisis could be worse than the Great Depression:

How could that possibly be, when the stock market has largely recovered? (Let's forget for a moment that the stock market rallied after 1929, but then crashed in a double dip).
To find out, we'll look at a couple comparisons to get an idea of what is going on in the rest of the economy. And then we'll compare the government's efforts in the 1930s to today.

Staten Island Assemblymember Matthew Titone held a press conference at the 9/11 Memorial on the waterfront to announce his new initiative "Boycott Amnesia - Never Forget 9/11 First Responders" campaign to hold the Senate and their corporate donors accountable for voting no on the James Zadroga 9-11 Health and Compensation Act. "It is shameful that a minority of Senators were able to block passage of the Zadroga 9-11 bill" Said Titone. "Using social media to engage people is essential to getting our message out."

NYPD Implements Iris Scanners

The NYPD has begun to implement iris scanners to create a bio-metric database of criminal suspects as they are processed through central booking. NYPD says this new identification program is a fail-safe measure to prevent escapes as suspects move through the court system and that this technology is in response to two suspects escaping police custody by impersonating lesser offenders.

Jeff Carter, CDO of Global Rainmakers Inc. a leader in the biometrics field says, “In the future, whether it's entering your home, opening your car, entering your workspace, getting a pharmacy prescription refilled, or having your medical records pulled up, everything will come off that unique key that is your iris. Every person, place, and thing on this planet will be connected [to the iris system] within the next 10 years.”

“Crash JP Morgan Day” Success: JPM Reduces Naked Silver Short Position.

December 7th in Europe, and 10th in the United States was dubbed “Crash JP Morgan Day” by several activist groups and financial & media personalities like Max Keiser of the Keiser Report. These financial vigilantes may not have succeeded in crashing JP Morgans stock, but JPM certainly got the message loud and clear. According to the Financial Times on monday “JPMorgan has quietly reduced a large position in the US silver futures market which had been at the centre of a controversy about its impact on global prices for the precious metal. “

The plan was simple: convince 100 million people to purchase 1 ounce of silver bullion. The theory is if 100 million people purchase one piece of silver at about $30 an ounce this will cause JPM to default on its naked short sale silver contracts, an estimated $1.5 trillion liability against their market capital of $150 billion.

PatriotAppIronically named after the Patriot Act, PatriotAppTM has just been released for the Apple iPhone. According to the developers website, Citizens Concepts says their app will “deputize your iPhone or iPad.”  They claim that the app “empowers citizens to assist government agencies in creating safer, cleaner, and more efficient communities via social networking and mobile technology.”

This app was founded on the belief that citizens can provide the most sophisticated and broad network of eyes and ears necessary to prevent terrorism, crime, environmental negligence, or other malicious behavior, but what it really does is turn average citizens into a network of spies feeding information back to the federal government.

McConnell Calls for Constitution to be Changed to Prosecute Assange

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is calling the founder of the online site Wiki Leaks a "high-tech terrorist" for releasing classified material from the U.S. government.

McConnell says that the online release of secret diplomat exchanges has done "enormous damage" to the country and to its relationship with its allies.

McConnell tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that he hopes Wiki Leaks founder Julian Assange will be prosecuted for the disclosures. And he says that if it's found that Assange hasn't violated the law, then the law should be changed.

The idea that boggles my mind is that no one seems to be upset that Clinton ordered US Diplomats to spy on other diplomats. Or that the US has been secretly bombing Yemen and the Yemeni Government has been taking the blame. Everyone wants to kill the messenger. I personally believe Julian Assange is actually controlled opposition operative working indirectly for the CIA as detailed in last weeks article working towards the goal of tightened cyber security or as It’s being dubbed on the internet “The Internet Patriot Act” as well as stirring up Neo-Conservative support for strikes on Pakistan and Iran; but lets put all that aside for a moment.

Federal Judge Blocks Healthcare Mandate

Federal judge Judge Henry E. Hudson declared the foundation of "obamacare" is unconstitutional, and that the federal government can not force Americans to purchase insurance. No immediate impact is likely as the appeals process begins and this case will likely appear before the U.S. Supreme Court for a final ruling.

Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., is asking the White House to agree to expedite a final ruling by appealing directly to the Supreme Court without first stopping at an appeals court. White House health reform director Nancy-Ann DeParle said the Justice Department is reviewing Hudson's ruling. "We are disappointed in today's ruling but continue to believe - as other federal courts in Virginia and Michigan have found - that the Affordable Care Act is constitutional," countered Justice Department spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler.

Dec 10th is Crash JP Morgan Day!

December 10, 2010

In March 2010 London trader and whistle blower Andrew Maguire exposed JPM’s methods of suppressing the silver market in a series of emails to the Eliud Ramirez a senior investigator of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission enforcement division. He provided data and was even able to accurately predict the method and timing of events that prove market manipulation on the part of JPM and the New York Federal Reserve, a feat impossible in a true free market system. Maguire handed JPM over to the CFTC on a “silver platter” (pun intended) His emails went largely ignored.

The inventor of the  virtual specialist technology / prediction markets and the Hollywood Stock Exchange, Max Keiser, along with Zero Hedge and other investors like Eric Sprott are leading a campaign to “Crash JP Morgan Chase.” The theory is if 100 million people purchase one piece of silver at about $30 an ounce this will cause JPM to default on its naked short sale silver contracts, an estimated $1.5 trillion liability against their market capital of $150 billion. Keiser predicts the result will be $500 silver spot price and more importantly the Death Star will crash when their stock plunges as a result of their default on their naked silver position and are forced to bankrupt.

“This campaign has 100% chance of working; it falls into the category of a self-fulfilling prophecy. As more individuals buy silver and gold, all attempts to replenish the system with more paper money will only cause the purchasing power of the silver and gold to increase – thus prompting more people to buy more. Any attempts to bail out JP Morgan would have the same effect. If the US Fed was to flood the system with bailout money for JP Morgan to cover their silver short position (as they did after the collapse of Long-Term Capital Management), more inflation will ensue and the price of silver and gold will rise more, triggering more purchases. A virtuous circle is born.” wrote Keiser in the London Guardian.

A devastating loss for the Wall Street oligarchs and a huge win for Main street. This type of success can expose the controlled market manipulation on a mass scale and bring to light JPM’s other dubious positions. “In the end, it's about transferring wealth back to the people from where it came” said Keiser.

Converting fiat currency back into real currency like silver, gold and other precious metals will expose the fiat ponzi scheme and help bring sound monetary policy back to the United States and could pave the way for the world. Even Robert Zoellick, the president of the World Bank, has called to bring gold back into the global monetary system. Although his agenda is less about putting wealth back in the hands of the people and more about creating a global currency that his bank will administrate. As gold prices rise investors will dump local currencies and invest in the World Banks gold backed currency effectively collapsing regional currencies and advancing the cause of global governance. Stated differently: The World Bank wants to control the worlds currency so it can then form a global government. Sound crazy? Think about it.

Today Max Keiser, economists and investors are asking all Americans to buy at LEAST one (1) ounce of PHYSICAL Silver offline at a local coin dealer or pawn shop or online at a primary dealer or on the secondary market like eBay.com. Do NOT buy any silver certificates or speculative silver mining stocks as this is the very fraud they are attempting to collapse.

Rebels Discover Death Star Weakness: Buy Silver; Crash JP Morgan

crash-jpm-w Danny Panzella
TruthSquad.TV
December 6, 2010

A recent propaganda piece in the NY Times by Roger Lowenstien painted Jamie Dimon CEO of JP Morgan Chase as some sort of folk hero among bankers. Somehow wiser with a superior morality than his bankster cronies. Yeah, wiser like a mob boss who sends his cronies out to do the “whacking” keeping his own hands clean. The bailout dust has settled and JPM has remained profitable every quarter during the recession.

Lowenstien paints a picture of a patriot doing the right thing in a culture of corruption; while Salon.com’s Andrew Leonard calls Dimon “dumb.” Dimon is neither a patriot nor a dummy and I doubt his feelings been hurt by criticism of the banking industry by the tea party, the media or anyone else.

This alleged Wall street god continued to lend to Main street even when other banks wouldn’t and because he was so credible, when the government needed to consolidate banks that were failing due to the collusion of JPM, Goldman Sachs and the Federal Reserve where did they turn? Jamie was happy to acquire Bear Stearns and WaMu. Along with the Bear Stearns acquisition they took control of the silver shorting market which put them in the precarious position they are in now. The Rebel forces are aligning their attack on the death star this week as people all over the world prepare to purchase silver.

Bob Chapman of The International Forecaster said in a recent interview, “JP Morgan is the largest share holder in the federal reserve bank, if we can crush them it will be fantastic.” he went on to say that JP Morgan is under heavy influence of the European investors like the British Royal family and always has been. Chapman is respected in the silver and gold trading markets and was one of the largest gold & silver stockbrokers in the 70’s and 80’s and also noted that JPM is shorting the silver market to back its derivatives position.

I want to first of all take a moment to thank everyone who supported my campaign for NY State Assembly.  As an independent tea party candidate I accomplished something that very few have been able to accomplish. With less than $3000 and no major party backing I was able to secure almost 10% of the vote. In the process I knocked on close to 15,000 doors and spoke to thousands of people to spread the message of Liberty.

What’s next? I am not slowing down. After taking a few days off (my feet were exhausted from walking the district twice in the last few months) I am back fighting for Liberty & the Constitution full steam. I have 2 exciting projects that I am working on. The first I am going to keep secret a little while longer as I iron out the details with my team. The second is a new streaming internet TV show called Truth Squad!

Ever notice how the mainstream media never asks the hard questions? Isn’t it the job of the press to hold the government accountable by keeping the electorate informed about what is going on? My vision for the show Truth Squad is to be the press that this country so desperately needs.

The Truth Squad team will be working day and night to follow local Staten Island and New York City politics, we will keep you informed of the important topics that the main stream media ignores and yet are vital to liberty!

We need your help to get started, so to raise funds we are raffling an new APPLE 32GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G.  Inscribed on the back of the Ipad is the timeless quote by Thomas Jefferson,

Establishment condescends Indie Candidates at VFW

Friday night the Richmond County American Legion Political Forum allowed candidates to address our honored veterans who fought to protect our right and ability to self govern. I personally learned a lot listening to all of the candidates. I heard  “angry revolutionaries” talk about the Constitution, the very precepts and ideals all veterans, law enforcement and government representatives take an oath to defend. They spoke about how important it is to carry on that defense not only on the battlefield but in Albany and DC. I also heard the establishment incumbents from both sides of the aisle admonish the next generation of candidates not to be too idealistic. They say pragmatism is how “stuff gets done” in Albany. (The only thing I see “getting done” are tax increases and service cuts.) Their critique of the new candidates was a transparent move by the incumbent delegation to circle the wagons. Staten Island if you are pleased with Albany, by all means vote for the incumbents. If you are ready for new blood, candidates who love, respect and will meaningfully swear their oath to the Constitution then vote for the “revolutionary” candidates on Nov 2nd.

Americans for Prosperity Applauds New York State Assembly Candidate Danny Panzella

-Signs No Climate Tax Pledge-

Washington, DC—The free market grassroots group Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today applauded New York State Assembly candidate Danny Panzella (63rd District) for signing the group’s “No Climate Tax Pledge.”  Panzella joins more than 725 bipartisan lawmakers and candidates on the federal, state and local levels pledging to “oppose legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.”

“The one thing elected officials should agree on is that global warming shouldn’t be used as an excuse to hike taxes on citizens and businesses,” said AFP Vice President for Policy Phil Kerpen.  “We encourage all of New York’s elected officials and candidates for office to sign the pledge.”

New York signers include nearly a dozen U.S. House candidates; State Senator Owen Johnson; and State Senate candidates Donna Marie Caltabiano, Pat Gallivan, Greg Ball and David DiPietro.

Cap-and-trade took its first step toward enactment last year when the U.S. House narrowly passed the Waxman-Markey energy tax bill, which escaped the lower chamber by a scant seven votes despite significant bipartisan opposition.  The U.S. Senate has struggled to pass companion legislation, with several key Democratic senators openly expressing opposition to attempting to pass the energy tax bill.

President Obama has made no secret of his support for the bill, which would be the largest tax increase in American history.  The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has scored the House plan as an $846 billion increase in federal revenue, a burden that will be borne by taxpayers and consumers for decades to come.  Recent analysis by the Institute for Energy Research found the Kerry-Lieberman Senate bill would cost the nation more than 500,000 jobs by 2015 and decrease household income by over $1,000 by 2020.

“Using the guise of climate change to transfer dollars from hard-working citizens to bureaucratic big government is unacceptable,” said Kerpen. “Regardless of their stance on global warming, this should be common ground for all of our elected officials at all levels of government.”

“ I will be introducing a State Sovereignty resolution to the legislature to reaffirm New York States sovereignty and block the unconstitutional federal power grabs like Cap and Trade, and Obama care.” Said Mr. Panzella. More information about his resolution is available at www.DontTreadOnStatenIsland.com .

The pledge is available online at www.NoClimateTax.com.  AFP does not endorse candidates.  All elected officials and candidates are encouraged to sign the pledge and go on the record in opposition to using the climate change issue to increase taxes and grow the size of government.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is a nationwide organization of citizen-leaders committed to advancing every individual’s right to economic freedom and opportunity. AFP believes reducing the size and intrusiveness of government is the best way to promote individual productivity and prosperity for all Americans. AFP educates and engages citizens to support restraining state and federal government growth and returning government to its constitutional limits. AFP is more than 1.5 million activists strong, with activists in all 50 states.  AFP has 31 state chapters and affiliates. More than 70,000 Americans in all 50 states have made a financial contribution to AFP or AFP Foundation. For more information, visit www.americansforprosperity.org

Americans for Prosperity does not support or oppose candidates for public office.

Progressive Politics Vs Conservative Principles

Danny Panzella,
Candidate for NYS 63rd Assembly District

Danny Panzella,
Candidate for NYS 63rd Assembly District
Staten Island

9/30/2010

Compiled from a recent unpublished interview.

Conservatives have not been properly educated on what a Libertarian is. During the course of this campaign I have been called a liberal or an anarchist. I am far from both, it is a matter of misinformation. The truth is that the libertarian political philosophy is actually more conservative than the Conservative Party. The founding fathers understood that morality is subjective in the minds of men. For them the bottom line was keeping the government from seizing the power to become a tyrannical monarchy that might impose it’s own brand of morality, whatever that might have been.

That is why our form of government was forbidden to legislate morality (aside from prohibition of force against another human being) Nor was the government ever intended to educate the people. Education, and morality were meant to be left up to the community. When the community is free to determine it’s own set of standards it is the people on the ground that make the decisions. (Not some removed, elite making decrees.) No one else should have the right to say what I do in my own home, short of hurting another person. My neighbors do have a say in regard to what I do in public in my neighborhood where it affects them. They can’t tell me what color to paint my house, but they can tell me that I cant drive my car 90 MPH on the communal roadways.

I would much rather have a discussion with my neighbors when an issue of conflict arises than to depend on government to settle the dispute. I am describing ground up, self determined rule.

Over the years progressive forces at work in both the Republicans and the Democrats have eroded both the desire and the ability for we the people to rule ourselves.

They have created an increasingly powerful centralized system of government and the ultimate expression of progressivism is totalitarianism. This is why a lot of our progressive leaders idolize Mao, for his “organizing”; why do they forget that Mao believed in violent class overthrow and murdered between 60 and 80 million people to “organize” China.

George Washington rightly predicted political parties …are likely to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government..” I consider myself Post-Partisan. The time for loyalty to political parties has passed. Conservative, libertarian IDEALS however, can offer a return to the fundamentals of the Constitution, freedom and prosperity.

We the people need to take back control of our elected officials through becoming an informed electorate, staying engaged with our representatives, and by running for office ourselves. I got involved with the tea party movement both locally and nationally, but the next logical step after attending rallies and waving signs is to run for office. We can reclaim our Republic from the ground up, starting with local offices like city council and the state legislatures, and right on until we the people own Washington DC again.

My opponent runs on the Conservative party line, this is indicative of the corrupt corporatist influence on Staten Island. The Conservative Party of New York State rated Mike Cusick in the 30% percentile of representing conservative values. So why does the Staten Island Conservative Party back Cusick who was mentored by Chuck Shumer? Who knows, I could speculate. They also backed Nancy Pelosi’s rubber stamp Mike McMahon. There obviously must be some quid pro quo.

I should mention that while the GOP refused to back me because I wouldn’t make a political deal, the Constitution Party of New York State as well as several tea party groups HAVE endorsed me. At this point with the train wreck the Staten Island GOP has become I’m not sure if a GOP nod would help or hurt my campaign. It almost seems that they are intentionally throwing the congressional race to the Democrats. Both the SI Conservative Party and GOP have destroyed any credibility they had.

Voters are educating themselves more as a result of the tea party movement, they are beginning to see the difference between true grassroots candidates and establishment controllers.

I am confident that Staten Islanders will vote for my conservative principles over the progressive politics of my Democratic establishment opponent. There is a lot to do, and not a lot of time to do it. I wont be very popular with my colleagues in Albany when I start to blow the whistle on the corruption. I am prepared for the attacks.

My plan is to be the eyes and ears of my district in Albany. I will come back and tell them the truth about what is going on, fully inform them so then we can then discuss the solutions. I am not running to rule, but to be a servant. When they ask for something I will determine through research and legal counsel if it is Constitutional, and if it is I will work towards achieving it on their behalf. If their requests are unconstitutional I will do my best to educate them as to why and show them a Constitutional solution. My term in office will be about a transparent conversation between the people of Staten Island and the Legislature in Albany.

The most important issue on my agenda is state sovereignty. We need to put up a blockade so the federal government can not violate the Constitution and violate our state rights.

My campaign is working with several other groups that have produced draft resolutions for sovereignty that have been submitted to several other state candidates, as well as incumbents. We have met with these candidates and have their full support. They have pledged sponsorship and agreed to introduce the measure should they become elected. We possess 2 versions of our sovereignty resolutions. One version, based on Jeffersonian principles, is arguably one of the most comprehensive in the country. The other, equally worthy, is a more generalized declaration based on constitutional principles, and influenced by James Madison. These draft resolutions took over a year of research, debate, reconciliation, and scholarly review.

The next crucial issue is to slash state spending and lower taxation. As a small business owner I know it is crucial to leave money in the pockets of small businesses so they can invest that money in expanding and creating jobs. That is the ONLY way we can improve the current economic situation in our State.

There are many other issues that are important to the tea party movement, and violations of the Constitution that need to be dealt with.

Death By Globalism

Paul Craig Roberts
September 1, 2010

Have economists made themselves irrelevant? If you have any doubts, have a look at the current issue of the magazine, International Economy, a slick endorsed by former Federal Reserve chairmen Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan, by Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank, by former Secretary of State George Shultz, and by the New York Times and Washington Post, both of which declare the magazine to be “ahead of the curve.”

farm40s.jpg

Today farming is in the hands of agri-business. There are no farms to which the unemployed can return. Photo: Jack Delano, Library of Congress, a farm in 1940.

The main feature of the current issue is “The Great Stimulus Debate.” Is the Obama fiscal stimulus helping the economy or hindering it?

Princeton economics professor and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi represent the Keynesian view that government deficit spending is needed to lift the economy out of recession. Zandi declares that thanks to the fiscal stimulus, “The economy has made enormous progress since early 2009,” an opinion shared by the President’s Council of Economic Advisors and the Congressional Budget Office.

The opposite view, associated with Harvard economics professor Robert Barro and with European economists, such as Francesco Giavazzi and Marco Pagano and the European Central Bank, is that government budget surpluses achieved by cutting government spending spur the economy by reducing the ratio of debt to Gross Domestic Product. This is the “let them eat cake school of economics.”

Barro says that fiscal stimulus has no effect, because people anticipate the future tax increases implied by government deficits and increase their personal savings to offset the added government debt. Giavazzi and Pagano reason that since fiscal stimulus does not expand the economy, fiscal austerity consisting of higher taxes and reduced government spending could be the cure for unemployment.

If one overlooks the real world and the need of life for sustenance, one can become engrossed in this debate. However, the minute one looks out the window upon the world, one realizes that cutting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, and housing subsidies when 15 million Americans have lost jobs, medical coverage, and homes is a certain path to death by starvation, curable diseases, and exposure, and the loss of the productive labor inputs from 15 million people. Although some proponents of this anti-Keynesian policy deny that it results in social upheaval, Gerald Celente’s observation is closer to the mark: “When people have nothing left to lose, they lose it.”

The Krugman Keynesian school is just as deluded. Neither side in “The Great Stimulus Debate” has a clue that the problem for the U.S. is that a large chunk of U.S. GDP and the jobs, incomes, and careers associated with it, have been moved offshore and given to Chinese, Indians, and others with low wage rates. Profits have soared on Wall Street, while job prospects for the middle class have been eliminated.

The offshoring of American jobs resulted from (1) Wall Street pressures for “higher shareholder returns,” that is, for more profits, and from (2) no-think economists, such as the ones engaged in the debate over fiscal stimulus, who mistakenly associated globalism with free trade instead of with its antithesis–the pursuit of lowest factor cost abroad or absolute advantage, the opposite of comparative advantage, which is the basis for free trade theory. Even Krugman, who has some credentials as a trade theorist has fallen for the equation of globalism with free trade.

As economists assume, incorrectly according to the latest trade theory by Ralph Gomory and William Baumol, that free trade is always mutually beneficial, economists have failed to examine the devastatingly harmful effects of offshoring. The more intelligent among them who point it out are dismissed as “protectionists.”

The reason fiscal stimulus cannot rescue the U.S. economy has nothing to do with the difference between Barro and Krugman. It has to do with the fact that a large percentage of high-productivity, high-value-added jobs and the middle class incomes and careers associated with them have been given to foreigners. What used to be U.S. GDP is now Chinese, Indian, and other country GDP.

When the jobs have been shipped overseas, fiscal stimulus does not call workers back to work in order to meet the rising consumer demand. If fiscal stimulus has any effect, it stimulates employment in China and India.

The “let them eat cake school” is equally off the mark. As investment, research, development, etc., have been moved offshore, cutting entitlements simply drives the domestic population deeper in the ground. Americans cannot pay their mortgages, car payments, tuition, utility bills, or for that matter, any bill, based on Chinese and Indian pay scales. Therefore, Americans are priced out of the labor market and become dependencies of the federal budget. “Fiscal consolidation” means writing off large numbers of humans.

During the Great Depression, many wage and salary earners were new members of the labor force arriving from family farms, where many parents and grandparents still supported themselves. When their city jobs disappeared, many could return to the farm.

Today farming is in the hands of agri-business. There are no farms to which the unemployed can return.

The “let them eat cake school” never mentions the one point in its favor. The U.S., with all its huffed up power and importance, depends on the U.S. dollar as reserve currency. It is this role of the dollar that allows America to pay for its imports in its own currency.

For a country whose trade is as unbalanced as America’s, this privilege is what keeps the country afloat.

The threats to the dollar’s role are the budget and trade deficits. Both are so large and have accumulated for so long that the prospect of making good on them has evaporated. As I have written for a number of years, the U.S. is so dependent on the dollar as reserve currency that it must have as its main policy goal to preserve that role.

Otherwise, the U.S., an import-dependent country, will be unable to pay for its excess of imports over its exports.

“Fiscal consolidation,” the new term for austerity, could save the dollar. However, unless starvation, homelessness and social upheaval are the goals, the austerity must fall on the military budget. America cannot afford its multi-trillion dollar wars that serve only to enrich those invested in the armaments industries. The U.S. cannot afford the neoconservative dream of world hegemony and a conquered Middle East open to Israeli colonization.

Is anyone surprised that not a single proponent of the “let them eat cake school” mentions cutting military spending? Entitlements, despite the fact that they are paid for by earmarked taxes and have been in surplus since the Reagan administration, are always what economists put on the chopping bloc.

Where do the two schools stand on inflation vs. deflation? We don’t have to worry. Martin Feldstein, one of America’s pre-eminent economist says: “The good news is that investors should worry about neither.” His explanation epitomizes the insouciance of American economists.

Feldstein says that there cannot be inflation because of the high rate of unemployment and the low rate of capacity utilization. Thus, “there is little upward pressure on wages and prices in the United States.” Moreover, “the recent rise in the value of the dollar relative to the euro and British pound helps by reducing import costs.”

As for deflation, no risk there either. The huge deficits prevent deflation, “so the good news is that the possibility of significant inflation or deflation during the next few years is low on the list of economic risks faced by the U.S. economy and by financial investors.”

What we have in front of us is an unaware economics profession. There may be some initial period of deflation as stock and housing prices decline with the economy, which is headed down and not up. The deflation will be short lived, because as the government’s deficit rises with the declining economy, the prospect of financing a $2 trillion annual deficit evaporates once individual investors have completed their flight from the stock market into “safe” government bonds, once the hyped Greek, Spanish, and Irish crises have driven investors out of euros into dollars, and once the banks’ excess reserves created by the bailout have been used up in the purchase of Treasuries.

Then what finances the deficit? Don’t look for an answer from either side of The Great Stimulus Debate. They haven’t a clue despite the fact that the answer is obvious.

The Federal Reserve will monetize the federal government deficit. The result will be high inflation, possibly hyper-inflation and high unemployment simultaneously.

The no-think economics establishment has no policy response for economic armageddon, assuming they are even capable of recognizing it.

Economists who have spent their professional lives rationalizing “globalism” as good for America have no idea of the disaster that they have wrought.

Dr. Paul Craig Roberts is the father of Reaganomics and the former head of policy at the Department of Treasury. He is a columnist and was previously an editor for the Wall Street Journal. His latest book, “How the Economy Was Lost: The War of the Worlds,” details why America is disintegrating.

Donovan suspends “Ferry Preacher’s” First Amendment for 3 years

D.A. Donovan should be ashamed of himself for intimidating Pastor Michael Ihedioha dubbed the “Ferry Preacher” into pleading guilty and taking a deal.  "Seeking to ban him from preaching on the boats could constitute a violation of his First Amendment rights, but we are asking that the defendant use the ferry terminal only for traveling and not engage in behavior seen as harassing other patrons, the defendant could be re-sentenced if he violates those conditions.”  said William J. Smith, spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan as reported by the Staten Island Advance.

So Mr. Smith openly admits they cannot force Pastor Ihedioha to stop preaching aboard the Ferry, and that it would be a violation of his rights, but they can “ASK” him to willingly give up his rights. A source told me that Pastor Ihedioha is afraid of going to trial for allegedly assaulting the police officer because he would face 5 – 15 years in prison so he took the deal. “Michael is a gentle soul, he wouldn’t swat a fly on the wall!” said Rev. Fran Mangano a friend of Pastor Ihedioha and fellow minister.

I have a question for Daniel Donovan, If Pastor Ihedioha assaulted a cop, why are you letting him off with just probationary conditions that he isn't allowed to preach on the ferry? Could it be that this “assault” charge is trumped up to intimidate the Pastor? Conveniently this “attack” happened behind closed doors away from all of the witnesses on the ferry boat. If this man violently assaulted a cop he should be taken to trial.

Donovan should be ashamed of himself, either for allowing a violent offender who assaulted a cop to go free without bringing him to trial, or for using a false allegation to intimidate a man into surrendering his constitutional liberty!

Just remember when the system takes away natural or civil rights, they always find a spin to garner popular support. In this case they use the fact that ferry preachers can be annoying to some people hence there was very little public outcry about this case.  Free speech and peaceful assembly EVEN ON THE FERRY is a protected right that government does not have the authority to take away. (So they must convince, coerce, or intimidate you into surrendering that right.) When you cheer the government taking someone else rights, you give them precedent and allow them to take that authority. Guess what, your speech will be next, and you can guarantee that there will be some group of citizens that will be in support of silencing you. It is a divide and conquer game of using one group of citizens to justify silencing another.

And the Christian community on Staten Island should also be ashamed for not speaking out in support of the Constitutional right to religious expression.

Reform the MTA

mtabus The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is hundreds of millions of dollars in the red, they are cutting services, and Staten Island is being hit the hardest. The MTA is cutting the little services Staten Islanders enjoy, even though they foot a disproportionate amount of the bill. Meanwhile some MTA leadership is enjoying pay in excess of $200,000 a year. If I was CEO of a corporation, being paid $350k and running at losses in the millions I would be replaced. By cutting leadership pay we can reduce the budget deficits and get us closer to restoring much needed services to Staten Island without hurting MTA workers.
The MTA is spending 4 billion dollars on the Second Avenue subway lines because that is Sheldon Silvers district. Meanwhile those subway riders can easily use the 4,5,6 line a few blocks away. So Staten Islanders are stranded with limited public transportation options so “Upper East siders” don’t have to walk a few blocks.

We Need A Fiscally Responsible Albany.

010908_albany_web The New York State legislature needs to create budgets that reflect fiscally conservative policies that enable job growth in the private sector, not just the transfer of jobs between sectors, or temporary job creation like the Census that boosts the job numbers without seriously affecting the unemployment situation for New Yorkers. A plan should include cutting unnecessary programs and spending, while increasing tax breaks that empower small businesses to create long term employment growth.

Along with the balanced budget, the legislature needs to work to eliminate laws and regulations that put a strain on small business while allowing politically connected corporate titans to prosper by eliminating their competition.

In light of the legislatures consistent inability or unwillingness to pass a budget on time rules should be put in place to penalize our representatives when the budget is not completed on time. Vacations, recess, bringing non-essential resolutions to the floor should not be permitted until a budget is passed. We cannot allow New Yorkers to suffer while our representatives posture and play politics. We must remind Albany that we are real people, with lives, and families that are affected every day by the decisions they make.

Independence Day, every day.

DTOSI-flag-dtom This 4th of July as we celebrate our independence from the tyrannical rule of Britain we face a new tyranny. That tyranny has gained control of our country because of the complacency of the citizens of the United States. In our success, and prosperity we have forgotten the turmoil through which our independence was won. This is the reason I have chosen to run for State Assembly, I can no longer stand back and be content to let this tyranny prevail.

People have been asking about the symbol I chose to represent my campaign, and my slogan "Don’t Tread on Staten Island" so I would like to share the history and symbolism of the rattlesnake.

Considered one of the first flags of the United States, The Gadsden flag is a historical American flag with a yellow field depicting a timber rattlesnake coiled and ready to strike. The flag read “Don’t Tread On Me” and was designed by American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden. The flag was later replaced by the current Stars and Stripes.  Since the Revolution, the flag has seen times of reintroduction as a symbol of American patriotism a symbol of disagreement with government, or a symbol of support for civil liberties such as in recent years with the libertarian and tea party movements.  As the American Revolution grew, the snake began to see more use as a symbol of the colonies.

Benjamin Franklin wrote of the rattlesnake in 1775: "I recollected that her eye excelled in brightness, that of any other animal, and that she has no eye-lids—She may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance.—She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders: She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage.—As if anxious to prevent all pretensions of quarreling with her, the weapons with which nature has furnished her, she conceals in the roof of her mouth, so that, to those who are unacquainted with her, she appears to be a most defenseless animal; and even when those weapons are shown and extended for her defense, they appear weak and contemptible; but their wounds however small, are decisive and fatal:—Conscious of this, she never wounds till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her.—Was I wrong, Sir, in thinking this a strong picture of the temper and conduct of America?"

Today more than ever before Americans need to be like the timber rattlesnake, guarding our liberty with a jealousy and righteous anger by fighting back with the weapons of our democracy to push back the evil grip of tyranny. Please join me in the fight by educating yourself, treat every day as if it were Independence Day, and be considerate of what you can do personally to preserve our liberty.

Happy Independence Day

Danny Panzella commits to supporting “NY Uprising” Initiative

According to a recent poll from Quinnipiac University 80 percent of New York State voters are “somewhat dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” with the way things are going in the state, also the highest dissatisfaction ever in New York.

New York State voters said overwhelmingly (59%-21%) that they would vote for candidates that support the creation of an independent group to draw legislative district lines. Former Mayor Ed Koch has introduced the NY Uprising initiative to advocate for that very issue. Mayor Koch is asking candidates to sign a pledge to support for drawing of political district lines by an independent group – not by the State Legislature to make for more competitive elections.

“In the coming weeks New York Uprising will be releasing proposals for non partisan redistricting, budget reform and ending “pay to play” politics in Albany. New York Uprising will focus strictly on good government reforms that go the heart of fairness, transparency and the effectiveness of government.” reads the groups website NYUprising.org.

New York State voters also disapprove 76 – 16 percent of the way the State Legislature is doing its job, the highest disapproval ever recorded. And a majority of voters (50% – 34%) said that State Assembly members, even their own representative, should be voted out of office this November

“The resentment is bigger than we’ve ever measured.  Just about half think that the whole Legislature should be voted out of office – even their own state senator and Assembly member,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

I share the same sentiment of the majority of New York voters that Albany is corrupt and broken, and that we need to “Vote them all out!” a slogan that the tea party has adopted in the last few years. That is why I chose to run for State Assembly to bring real middle class representation back to Albany. I support the stated goals of NY Uprising and am excited to see the proposals in the next few weeks and be a part of the discussion.

Albany… You’re Fired!

Danny Panzella
6/28/2010

The NYS Legislature is playing dangerous politics with the lives of the voters in New York when it refused to return to Albany to finish the budget deal. The Legislature refused to enter an “extraordinary session” because technically they have been in extraordinary session for months. This game is appalling and voters need to call out their legislators on this disgusting political show.

The legislature has voted against several key proposals by the Governors office that are in the best interest of businesses and in turn New Yorkers. Paterson proposed allowing grocery stores the ability to sell wine giving grocery stores a new income stream, and the state more tax revenue.

Another proposal was to cap the growth of local property taxes, including school taxes. Ill say that again, your elected representatives SAID NO to capping property taxes. Paterson and legislators agreed on a temporary reinstatement on clothing tax.

Paterson says there is $400 million in unfunded spending in the legislatures budget.

GUN RIGHTS PREVAIL: SCOTUS upholds 2nd Amendment

Danny Panzella
6/28/2010

The Supreme Court today (Monday 6/28/2010) upheld the 2nd amendment federally protected right to keep and bear arms to all 50 states.

The court issued the 5-4 ruling Monday morning in McDonald vs. City of Chicago, which challenged handgun bans in the City of Chicago. Where Mr. McDonald sued the city to win back his 2nd Amendment right to bear arms to protect himself in his “rough neighborhood.” Chicago had banned handguns. Mr. McDonald had been burglarized several times in the past few years. I’ve considered owning guns illegally to protect my life, “But i wont do that.” Said McDonald on the Stossel show which aired last week.

In a 2008 decision (D.C. v. Heller ) that invalidated the handgun ban in the nation's capital. More importantly, that decision held that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was a right the Founders specifically delegated to individuals. The justices affirmed that decision and extended its reach to the 50 states. Today's ruling also invalidates Chicago's handgun ban.

Chief Justice John Roberts was the most vocal advocate of using the Due Process Clause to extend the Second Amendment rights to the states. "I don't see how you can read -- I don't see how you can read Heller and not take away from it the notion that the Second Amendment...was extremely important to the framers in their view of what liberty meant."

The discussion over "liberty" was a major philosophical theme of the arguments. Gura and National Rifle Association lawyer Paul Clement argued that the rights articulated in the Second Amendment are fundamental freedoms and would exist to all Americans even if there was no law specifically saying so.

The language used in reporting this victory for personal sovereignty and constitutional liberty by the mainstream corporate media is reprehensible. Media outlets are reporting that SCOTUS “extended” gun rights to the states. Implying that SCOTUS has the authority to decide whether or citizens are allowed to own guns. I’ve got news for the media many of which would love to see the populace unarmed; the Constitution of the United States GUARANTEES the right to keep and bear arms for all citizens. No one, not SCOTUS, or Elena Kagan, or President Obama has the authority to take back that right.

Freedom of Education

ps44 Freedom of choice is one of the key principles that made the United States great. But with the education system we have very little choice. You can choose the socialist public school system that is based on top-down, command-and-control with bureaucratic committees of elites planning the education of we the people. Non-compliance is criminalized and funding is extorted through taxation. Even those who don’t have children are forced to fund the public education system. The other option is expensive private or religious schools reserved for the wealthy, connected or religious.

Charter schools are crucial in the fight to improve education. Charter schools are generally run much more efficiently than government schools saving the tax payers money and providing for more stable job environments for teachers. The demand for Charter schools is rising as the Public education system fails systemically not only to educate but to administrate.

The Charter school system provides freedom of choice for parents, better educations for children and a smaller tax burden for the community. Competition provides for quality of service and competitive pricing as opposed to government monopoly.

Job Growth NYS’s #1 Priority

With the economy headed deeper into a depression contrary to what the main stream media would have us to believe we are in a crisis situation. Emergency steps must be taken to ensure that our local economy can recover. Emergency cuts need to be made in our spending, but also in taxation.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics New York boasts an 8.3% unemployment rate (May 2010) Small business is the number one job creator. We need to create the environment where small businesses can expand and create new jobs. The government needs to stay out of the economic stimulus business and allow the free market to function without fascist interventionist policy smothering all but the politically connected private sector.

A repeal of the “Orwellian” MTA tax would be the first cut to be made. This not only burdens business owners with yet another levy, it also creates more paperwork, more record keeping and higher accounting expenses that come along with the required reporting rules. Some other ways we can help small business is to reduce red tape, regulations and laws that expand government control and cost jobs. Tax credits for employers for every new job they create would also benefit small business and get New Yorkers back to work.

Spending is a politician’s favorite vice. They spend to buy constituencies regardless of the budget constraints; I believe this is why the budget is never passed on time. The two party dictatorship constantly postures over where to spend the money. Many of these expenditures and projects are out of the scope of the authority of the state Constitution. This means the New York State Legislature has NO AUTHORITY to spend our money they way they do! One of my objectives will be to audit the legislatures spending and begin to cut the non essential expenditures, expensive regulations and laws that are forcing jobs out of New York State and straining our economy.

Albany - Robbing from Paul to pay Paul

Albany - Robbing from Paul to pay Paul
June 16th 2010

Albany’s pension Ponzi is now complete. In a very creative budgetary sleight-of-hand they decided to make obligated payments to the State’s pension plan…  By borrowing from that very same plan.  Clearly, they are now praying they can hold it together until the November elections.

Regrettably, many New Yorkers who work for the state are never going to receive their promised wages or pensions.  While I am sympathetic, I also have to point out that taking a career politician at his or her word is asking to be screwed over.

But given the magnitude of this problem, what can be done?

If I was governor (with emergency powers), I would immediately:

- Slash all expenditures by 10%, looking to cut them by 25% total.

- Privatize everything possible.

- Retroactively change pensions, calculating them by the average wage over the worker’s career (to correct for ‘stuffing’ the last year with excess overtime).

- Replace state pensions with 401ks .

- Direct the state pension fund and general fund to immediately allocate 10% of its resources in physical gold and silver – before every other state catches on that this is the only asset that is likely to retain its value .

- Create a task force to uncover state fraud

- Start a New York State charter bank and return control of financing projects to the people of NY.

- Simplify the tax code.

- Meet with business leaders to uncover what legislation impedes job creation and remove it.

- Negotiate a pay cut for public unions, and if they were unwilling to be reasonable, fire them all – and rehire them at a rate we can afford.

- Decriminalize (not legalize) marijuana, so that it would still be kept off the streets, but pot smokers would pay a stiff fine instead of facing jail time and a criminal record.

- Re-open our two shuttered nuclear power plants and bring them back online using thorium, a safer, cleaner, abundant, and peaceful type of nuclear energy; financed by bonds secured by the future power production of these plants.

…And that’s just for starters.

Since I am not governor, but a mere candidate for State Assembly (district 61, Libertarian party), and since Albany is unlikely to change course until they are forced by a system collapse, I urge New Yorkers to take steps and protect themselves.

When New Yorkers go to the polls this November, I urge them to vote Libertarian.  Staten Islanders can send a powerful message by sending me and my running mates to Albany.  We might not be able to bully or bribe them into doing what is right, but we will get in their faces, we will get them on record, and we will put them on notice.

Because they will know, deep in their guts, that we’re only the first guys over the wall…  And many more will follow.

Faithfully yours,

Dave Narby

The National Inflation Association “MELTUP” Update

The National Inflation Association is pleased to announce that it has released an update to its latest critically acclaimed documentary 'Meltup'. Meltup was released exactly one month ago and has already received over 561,000 views with an overwhelming 96% of its viewers giving it a thumbs up.

NIA's new Meltup Update Video is 7 minutes long and was produced in the same quality as the documentary. It goes over the most important economic events that have taken place since the release of Meltup. The video offers evidence that Americans are beginning to become educated to the truth about the U.S. economy and inflation. It also offers hope that even the U.S. government may be beginning to move in the right direction.

Tea Party Leader Announces Candidacy!

portrait_web Hello, my name is Danny Panzella and I want to take this opportunity on Memorial Day to honor those who have shed blood for our Liberty by announcing my candidacy for the New York State Assembly for the 63rd district.

I am a lifelong Staten Islander and resident of the 63rd Assembly District. More recently I am a Tea Party activist. Over the past several years we have all become disgusted with the culture of corruption and crony-ism that dominates both parties in Albany and Washington. The Tea Party and other activist groups stepped

up to make their voices heard and now it is time for the Tea Party on Staten Island to turn their impassioned cries against tyranny into action. I will now take the fight to Albany and bring back the Constitutional values of states’ rights, fiscal responsibility and protection of individual liberty in our State.

I believe in the value of personal liberty. ALL PEOPLE should be free to make choices for themselves and to accept responsibility for their choices. I support full first amendment freedom of expression for all people. I strongly support economic liberty and a truly free market where competition breeds prosperity.
The incumbents have proven they operate in their own best interest first, their party second and the lobby groups who fund them third. Vote for me because unlike the crony system that has evolved in Albany, I will do whatever you want me to do. I represent you! And if I disagree with you we will have a town hall meeting and we can discuss why I think what you are asking for is not in your best interest. But in the end I will do what you tell me to do, you are electing me to be your representative, not a ruler over you!

The bottom line is Liberty. Our founding fathers lived under an oppressive regime. In a country as great as ours it is easy to forget the hardship they endured, and the reasons they wrote protections against government into the Constitution the way they did. It is time to take back the republic they formed and choose Liberty over Tyranny.

Thank you for listening and I look forward to your support. Please visit my website http://www.DontTreadonStatenIsland.com for more information. This Memorial Day as we remember those who have shed blood for our Liberty, let us meditate on what WE can do every day to protect Liberty in honor of their memory.

Obama doth protest too much on new AZ Immigration legislation

PHOENIX – Obama on Thursday criticized a pending Arizona law that would make it a state crime to be in the United States illegally and require anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant to produce identification. The bill however requires all citizens to carry a federal id that proves citizenship such as a passport or birth certificate. (Will President Obama be required to show his birth certificate on his next trip to Arizona?)

Such legislation could “threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans,” the president said during a naturalization ceremony for members of the United States Armed Services.  The President is correct, but does he really mean what he says?

I think the Obama administration is protesting too much in an attempt to mobilize the republicans and tea party movement to support similar legislation in other states that would eventually be used against American citizens. After last years MIAC, and Homeland Security reports naming patriots, veterans, gun owners, Christians, Ron Paul supporters and other liberty groups as "potential domestic terrorists" It is clear who the federal government is declaring as its most important enemy (second of course to Iran). It has been recently suggested in the media that the Tea Party movement might team up with Al Qaeda to commit terrorist acts on U.S. Soil.

With Arizona blazing a trail with its police state legislation this will lead the way for other states to follow suit with full republican and tea party support. The legislation seems like common sense. Stop immigrants to make sure they are in the country legally.

The bill does not specifically single out illegal Latinos. What if someone leaves the house and forgets their "papers" should they be detained by law enforcement? This bill would make it possible for just such a scenario to occur. Although Americans have been desensitized to the suspension of probable cause, warrants, and habeas corpus since 9/11, this is one step closer to a totalitarian police state.

And what of privacy? I know reality TV and facebook have brainwashed people into thinking there is no such thing as privacy anymore, As a sovereign US citizen and more importantly a human being with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness no one has the right to impose what amounts to warrantless searches or detention. And i certainly retain my right to privacy. We the people have become too accustomed to law enforcement stopping us at their whim and performing impromptu roadside interrogations.

Illegal and unconstitutional (the patriot act is an "illegal law" according the to constitution/bill of rights) the only reason the court doesn't overturn it is because they get paid off by the privatized prisons, for every "criminal" they send them. Anyone who thinks this law is to be used against illegals is naïve. The patriot act effectively makes EVERY person a criminal just because law enforcement says you are.

In 2007 two New York police officers interrupted a peaceful demonstration on a public sidewalk in front of the new WTC 7 Building to intimidate free speech, stating "Larry [Silverstein] doesn't want to hear it," before accusing Luke Rudkowski of having a bomb and that his cell phone was "a gun."

The officer was apparently responding to refusals to stop filming their faces as police attempted to impede free speech on behalf of Larry Silverstein, making slanderous and knowingly false accusations including:

"I think he's got a bomb in his bag. I saw wires coming out.  I think he's got a bomb in there."

Rudkowski tells him he is not a terrorist and that he is an American citizen. The officer responds, " You're right. But by the time the government figures it out, you'll be in the hole for 30 days ."

They laughed about it drunk on their police state power. The sick thing is, they were right. Law enforcement gets away with this stuff all the time. Section 802 of the patriot act says the government can EXECUTE a citizen, in secret, with NO trial.

My point was you don't violate the rights of 300 or so million Americans because of 30 or so million illegals. You don't let one apple spoil the bunch. They are the exception, not the rule. It is the job of law enforcement to protect our rights, not take our rights away so they can bust "criminals".

How I Learned to Love the New World Order By Joseph R. Biden

How I Learned to Love the New World Order was originally published in the Wall Street Journal April 23, 1992 on page A13.

Imagine my surprise when a Wall Street Journal editorial appointed me dean of the Pat Buchanan school of neo-isolationism. My credentials? Believing that the Pentagon’s new strategy — America as “Globocop” — could render the United States a hollow superpower. All agree we need the military capacity to defend our vital interests — by ourselves when need be. The question is grand strategy. With the Journal’s endorsement, the Pentagon has called for a Pax Americana: The U.S. should cast so large a military shadow that no rival dare emerge.

American hegemony might be a pleasant idea, but is it economically, politically or even militarily wise? Bristling with weapons, we would continue our economic decline, while rising industrial and financial giants in Europe and Asia viewed our military pretensions with indifference or contempt.

Defense Secretary Dick Cheney outdid even the Journal, dipping deep into the well of Cold War argumentation to accuse Pax Americana critics of thinking “America’s world presence is somehow immoral and dangerous.

” Why doesn’t the Journal stop the namecalling, get its schools sorted out, and court an honest debate over America’s proper role in the new world order?

Pat Buchanan’s “America First” preaches martyrdom: We’ve been suckered into fighting “other” people’s battles and defending “other” people’s interests. With our dismal economy, this siren song holds some appeal.

But most Americans, myself included, reject 1930s-style isolationism. They expect to see the strong hand of American leadership in world affairs, and they know that economic retreat would yield nothing other than a lower standard of living. They understand further that many security threats — the spread of high-tech weapons, environmental degradation, overpopulation, narcotics trafficking, migration — require global solutions.

What about America as globocop? First, our 21st-century strategy has to be a shade more clever than Mao’s axiom that power comes from the barrel of a gun. Power also emanates from a solid bank balance, the ability to dominate and penetrate markets, and the economic leverage to wield diplomatic clout.

Second, the plan is passive where it needs to be aggressive. The Journal endorses a global security system in which we destroy rogue-state threats as they arise. Fine, but let’s prevent such problems early rather than curing them late. Having contained Soviet communism until it dissolved, we need a new strategy of “containment” — based, like NATO, on collective action, but directed against weapons proliferation.

The reality is that we can slow proliferation to a snail’s pace if we stop irresponsible technology transfers. Fortunately, nearly all suppliers are finally showing restraint. The maverick is China, which persists in hawking sensitive weapons and technology to the likes of Syria, Iran, Libya, Algeria and Pakistan — even while pledging otherwise.

The Senate has tried to force China’s leaders to choose between Third World arms sales (1991 profits of $500 million) and open trade with the U.S. (a $12.5 billion annual Chinese surplus). Even though we have convincing intelligence that China’s leaders fear the use of this leverage, the president inexplicably refuses to challenge Beijing.

Weapons containment can’t be foolproof; and against a nuclear-armed North Korea, I would support pre-emptive military action if necessary. But let’s do our best — using supplier restraint and sanctions against outlaw sellers and buyers-to avoid having to round up the posse.

Why not an anti-proliferation “czar” in the cabinet to give this objective the prominence it urgently needs?

Third, Pax Americana is a direct slap at two of our closest allies — Japan and Germany — and a repudiation of one of our panel1. Rather than denigrating collective security, we should regularize the kind of multilateral response we assembled for the Gulf War. Why not breathe life into the U.N. Charter? great postwar triumphs. For years, American leaders argued that building democracy in Europe and Asia would guarantee stability because democracies don’t start wars. Now the Pentagon says we must keep our military large enough to persuade Japan and Germany “not to aspire to a greater role even to protect their legitimate interests.”

How has our success suddenly become a threat? It hasn’t, but the Pentagon plan could become a self-fulfilling prophecy. By insulting Tokyo and Berlin, and arrogating to ourselves military stewardship of the world, we may spark the revival no one wants.

Secretary Cheney says he wants the allies to share the burden on defense matters. But Pax Americana puts us on the wrong end of a paradox: Hegemony means that even our allies can force ever greater U.S.

defense spending the more they try to share the burden!

Fourth, collective security doesn’t rule out unilateral action. The Journal says I’m among those who want “Americans . . . to trust their security to a global committee.” But no one advocates that we repeal the “inherent” right of self-defense enshrined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

Secretary Cheney says his plan wouldn’t undermine support for the U.N. Who would know better than the U.N.’s usually understated secretary general? If implemented, says Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the Pentagon’s strategy would spell “the end of the U.N.” Rather than denigrating collective security, we should regularize the kind of multilateral response we assembled for the Gulf War. Why not breathe life into the U.N. Charter? It envisages a permanent commitment of forces, for use by the Security Council. That means a presumption of collective action — but with a U.S. veto.

Rather than defending military extravagance, the Bush administration should be reallocating Pentagon funds to meet more urgent security needs: sustaining democracy in the former Soviet empire; supporting U.N. peacekeepers in Yugoslavia, Cambodia and El Salvador; and rebuilding a weakened and debt-burdened America.

If Pentagon strategists and their kneejerk supporters could broaden their horizons, they would see how our superpower status is best assured. We must get lean militarily, revitalize American economic strength, and exercise a diplomatic leadership that puts new muscle into institutions of collective security.
